Mobile Air Defence Platform — Pedestal Motor Control & Radar Frequency Feed

A motor drive and a frequency converter sourced from separate foreign suppliers were replaced by a matched TEDEG pair, designed together so that neither interferes with the other.

Customer & Context

A leading Turkish air defence systems manufacturer selected TEDEG Defence for a next-generation mobile platform. The system comprises a pedestal mounted on a tactical truck chassis, a radar group and fire-control electronics. Two subsystems were critical: pedestal motion control on the azimuth and elevation axes, and an isolated, stable 400 Hz supply for the radar and fire-control electronics.

Challenge

In the previous configuration, the motor drive and the static frequency converter came from two separate foreign suppliers. In the field this caused the following problems:

  • EMI/EMC conflict: PWM switching noise from the motor drive degraded the harmonic purity of the radar supply, and MIL-STD-461F tests kept raising issues. Because the conflict sat between two manufacturers' products, ownership of the fix was unclear.
  • Long lead times: both products came with long, hard-to-predict delivery times, leaving the programme schedule dependent on the suppliers.
  • Cost and currency risk: foreign-currency pricing made long-term contract planning difficult.

The customer wanted a matched pair of systems from a single manufacturer.

TEDEG Solution

TEDEG R&D treated the two products as one system from the outset: the motor drive's switching noise and the frequency converter's output quality were addressed within the same EMI/EMC filtering approach, and both units were customised to the platform's cabling and communications architecture.

Mil-Drive-55 — Pedestal Motor Drive & Control Unit

FOC vector-controlled drive for the pedestal motors, delivering coordinated, precise positioning on the azimuth and elevation axes. It receives real-time commands from the fire-control system over CAN bus. The closed-loop control algorithm was tuned to the platform's inertial characteristics, and Safe Torque Off cuts motor torque safely in an emergency.

PowerGuard 115/200 VAC 400 Hz Static Frequency Converter

Isolated 400 Hz output for the radar group and fire-control electronics, with single-phase or three-phase connection options. The static conversion topology has no moving parts and delivers a clean, stable sine wave without passing input disturbances through to the load. The shared filtering approach was designed to keep motor drive noise off the radar supply.

Outcome

Because the motor drive and frequency converter were designed together around a common EMI/EMC filtering topology, the interference that had troubled the previous set-up was dealt with at the design stage rather than in the field. Both units were developed to meet MIL-STD-461F requirements as a pair.

  • Single domestic supplier: one point of contact for design, integration, test support and after-sales service.
  • More predictable schedule: with engineering and production in Türkiye, change requests and deliveries can be followed closely.
  • Reduced currency exposure: domestic supply made long-term contract planning easier.
  • Platform-specific tuning: the pedestal control algorithm was set up for the platform's own dynamics.

The project became one of the references showing that TEDEG can deliver motor control and frequency conversion under a single systems-engineering approach.
