Running an armoured vehicle's main diesel engine just to power its electronics during a surveillance task burns fuel and gives the vehicle away acoustically and thermally. Auxiliary power units (APU) solve this by powering mission electronics at 28 VDC with the main engine off — a capability known as Silent Watch.

Which power class should I choose, and how do I size the APU?+
The PowerGuard YGG-DS11 delivers 28 VDC / 10 kW; across the TEDEG APU family, power output is tailored to the platform from 2 kW to 100 kW. To size the unit, define the total load to be supplied at the same time during Silent Watch (weapon systems, communications, climate control), the installation volume and weight limit in the vehicle, the cooling method, fuel system integration and the control and monitoring interface. For reference, the YGG-DS11 has a 1000 × 591 mm footprint, a 435 mm engine height and weighs 375 ± 10 kg.
How is the APU integrated into the vehicle, and does it need a separate fuel tank or battery?+
No. TEDEG APUs are integrated directly into the vehicle's design and need no separate batteries or fuel tanks. The YGG-DS11 uses a water-cooled, vertical, turbocharged Kubota D1105 diesel engine; it is started by a starter motor, runs on diesel fuel and has an integrated water-cooling system. The maximum operating temperature is +49 °C and the storage temperature −40 °C … +60 °C.
How is the APU controlled and monitored?+
The IP67 control panel mounted close to the APU carries LEDs for APU status, fuel level, pressure, DC current and battery voltage; Start/Stop, Auto/Manual and Reset buttons; a fault code indicator, adjustable alarm volume, a night mode and access to the latest 500 log records. The remote controller (12–24 VDC, 120 × 110 × 60 mm, 630 g, IP67, −40 °C … +85 °C) switches the APU on and off, shows its data on the information screen, manages the air-conditioning system, triggers the CIT test and provides an emergency shutdown.
Which military standards are stated?+
The datasheet states MIL-STD-810G and MIL-STD-461E/F compliance and IP67 dust and water protection for the control panel and the remote controller; these figures apply to the control units. If your platform requires testing of the complete APU, state the test plan and your report requirement at the quotation stage.
What is used instead of an APU for a short-term need?+
For short-term backup after the engine is switched off, the PowerGuard EBB Supercapacitor Backup Unit is an option: 3600 F supercapacitor, 16–32 VDC, 3 hours of supply after ignition off, no more than 1 kg. If mission electronics must be supplied continuously at the 10 kW level during Silent Watch, the APU is the right choice.
What information should I send for a quotation?+
Send the platform type, the total 28 VDC load to be supplied during Silent Watch (kW), the expected watch duration, the installation volume and weight limit in the vehicle and the control and monitoring interface you require through the quote form.
